Niger Delta: Nigerian Army To Apply Rules Of Engagement


General Ibrahim Atahiru, the General Officer Commanding, 82 Division, told reporters after a meeting of all principal officers of the Nigerian Army with the Chief of Army Staff in Abuja on Wednesday, that the army would no longer allow any attack on its troops to go unpunished.


Atahiru said the two weeks ceasefire directive from the Federal Government is to enable government reach out to the militants in a non- combat manner.

He, however, maintained that the army would deal decisively with vandals until they were subdued.

Meanwhile, the Niger Delta Avengers, a group that has claimed responsibility for most of the recent attacks on oil facilities in the region has denied engaging the Nigerian military in combat.

In a statement on its website, the group urged all groups in Rivers, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States not to attack soldiers, warning that it would deal with any group that attacks military.
