Nigeria Has Highest Number Of ‘Igbo’ Smokers In Africa – Statistics

Statistics show that Nigeria has the highest number of smokers in Africa on the world marijuana consumption chart released by HealthGrove with Zambia, Madagascar and Egypt making the top four. Nigeria was ranked fourth in the world . It stated that about 15% of the country’s population of about 170 million are regular smokers of marijuana.


Iceland was ranked top in the world with more than 18 per cent of the population smoking cannabis according to the most recent statistics available, drawn from the records of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. The United States was second with 15.4 per cent reporting having used the drug in 2013 while Britain was joint 23rd with 6 per cent in the same year. The Netherlands, where it is legal to possess up to 5 grams and to use in coffee shops, came in 20th with seven per cent reporting using marijuana. Jamaica is one place higher in 19th with 7.12 per cent saying they use the drug.

New Zealand,  Nigeria and Canada make up the rest of the top five while Australia, where 10.6 per cent reported using marijuana in 2013, was sixth. France was placed 15th while Ireland was joint 23rd alongside Britain.
