Group accuses minister of appointing friends as VCs

Protesters numbering 2,000 on Wednesday staged a protest in Abuja against the sack of 13 Vice Chancellors of universities and the appointment of new ones to replace them.
The protesters, under the ageis of Coalition of Civil Society Groups (CCSG), barricaded the National Assembly where they chanted solidarity songs, carrying placards with writings like "Adamu must go", "Reinstate the sacked VCs now" and "Nigeria needs a better administrator in the Education Ministry", among others.
A petition to the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, was later handed over to the National Assembly Deputy Sergeant-At-Arms, Mr Dennis Maaji.
The protesters later proceeded to the headquarters of Federal Ministry of Education, located at Federal Secretariat, Abuja.
Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Folashade Esan, told THISDAY that the ministry was yet to receive the official complain by the group.
According to her, the ministry will only respond to the group's complains when it officially receive the letter from the protesters.
Addressing the protesters, National Coordinator of the group, Etuk Bassey Willams said the group will not allow the decision to stand, as it runs contrary to extant laws governing university system in the country.
