Benue: Fulani Herdsmen Kill 7, Burn Houses In Agatu

At least seven people have been killed in violence between Fulani herdsmen and farmers in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.

According to eye witnesses, the Fulani herdsmen moved in a convoy and descended on an area near a river inhabited by the Agatu at around 10 am on Sunday. The convoy of the marauding Fulani herdsmen divided themselves into two groups. One group attacked Adeka, while the other Ologba.

After the fighting had died down, at least, seven people were found to have been killed, with dozens more injured.

Several houses and farms in the area were destroyed as well and it may be some time until the shattered farming community recovers.

Reacting to this development the Governor of Benue State, Dr Samuel Ortom urges cessation of hostilities and dispatch his deputy, Engr. Benson Abounu to the area for personal assessment.

The Deputy Governor met with members of the community, urge them not to retaliate and promised that the state government would do everything possible in its power to beef up security in the area.

A former chairman Agatu Local Government Council, Michael Inalegwu, an indigene of the area, Akpa Idu and a representative of the youths noted that 9400 lives have been lost since the beginning of the Fulani invasion and if such atrocities are not checkmated, Agatu will go into extinction. On his part, Ada_Agatu chief Godwin Onah called on the governor to come to the plights of the peace-loving community who have been brutalised.
