“Bishop Obinna, And Fr Mbaka Should Leave Politics Alone” —Okorocha

If nothing is done to arrest the situation or cooled frayed nerves, Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha and the Catholic Clergy may be headed for a showdown, something similar to the kind of bare-knuckle fight that the state witnessed during the Ohakim’s adminstration.

Recently in one of hispublic outings, Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha descended heavily on two revered men of God, lambasting them for abandoning their priestly callings for partisan politics. The two men of God he singled out were Archbishop AJV Obinna, Bishop of the Catholic archdiocese of Owerri and the Rev Father Ejike Mbaka of the Adoration Ministries Enugu Nigeria, AMEN.

Unleashing his vituperations on the two, he revealed that Archbishop Obinna, Okorocha openly told him during the countdown to the last gubernatorial election in the state that he (Bishop Obinna) was a card carrying member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.

“Now that APGA has failed, does it mean that Bishop Obinna has failed?”, he asked perjoratively.

On Bishop Obinna’s call for the publication of the accounts of the state, the Governor said his numerous projects scattered all over the state are enough to account for the state’s finances. He said that the state’s share of the federal revenue can hardly meet with the salaries of the state’s public servants.

It would be recalled that the Bishop had in a recent public statement called for the governor to make public the state account so that people can use it to analyze and judge for themselves the financial situation of the state. This demand did not go down well with the governor who equally chose a controlled setting of a press conference he had in government house to lambast the Bishop.

On Rev Father Mbaka, the Governor said the popular Catholic Priest lied when he said that he, Okorocha issued the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri a bounced cheque of N50m. He said that it was curious that Bishop Obinna never publicly acknowledged that he, on the contrary received the money from him.

Quoting copiously from the holy Bible, Okorocha said he was leaving both men to the judgment of God even as he advised them to mind their priestly duties and leave the murky waters of Nigerian politics to politicians.
